so good. so good.

Just started watching Parks and Rec

It is excellent. I like it a lot. “How did you make this? —Photoshop — …How? — Computers.”

Dreams

Have been messing with my emotions a lot lately. Pretty much just laid in bed feeling yech for 2 hours upon waking up because of a stupid dream.

I feel major feminist boredom when talking about rape. Like it feels bad, it happens a lot, we get it, but I don’t know how to talk about it and not feel tragic in a really trite way.

Whatever violation is borecore

Puke on my face

I think there might be something really…

This reminds me of DFW and Infinite Jest in a really sad-true way.

Charlie Sheen has been given…

This is just me, but I don’t see, or hear of, Charlie Sheen very frequently. Popular musicians are way higher up on my Relevancy Radar—not because I like them, or pay attention to them more, but because I simply do not watch television. I might be mistaken, but TV is, like, the main medium through which *any* person is gonna hear about Charlie Sheen, right? As opposed to popular musicians whom everyone likes and/or listens to so you’re undoubtedly going to see news pop up on blogs, various news sites, friend’s FB statuses, etc. Chris Brown has been a far bigger part of the social zeitgeist (in part due to his relationship to Rihanna and somewhat popular musicianship)—that’s why news of him criminally abusing Rihanna was everywhere. Charlie Sheen is really only well-known amongst adults who watch(ed) Two and A Half Men, young (mostly white, cis-male) people who adore him for “being cool” (ugh, kill me), and mystery category 3 people? Rather than speaking to an issue of “oh, we see this dude’s actions but we’re going to remain silent about them,” it seems like a “this guy is so not culturally relevant that we literally hadn’t even *heard* about these new commercials and shit.” Which ultimately is an issue of awareness. And which is ultimately an issue of the public’s awareness of one (black) superstar’s fuck-up, and its contrasting lack of awareness regarding another (white) star’s fuck-up. Which pretty much boils down to the media having a “better reason” (read: racist reason) to blast one story louder over the airwaves than another. Some people straight up do *not* watch television and therefore do *not* hear about Charlie Sheen’s umpteenth shitparade. Does that make sense?

i understand what you are saying and it makes sense but i feel like there is a lot of excuse making for certain people. like, a lot of this post is directed at feminists who make a living blogging off these issues or spend their time blogging on pop culture/overall culture in america and yet, this has missed their radar. music is a big deal but charlie sheen was the top paid tv actor on tv for a few years before he got fired. tho white feminists may not watch his show, the fact that he can go below the radar or unnoticed is yes, as you already said you noticed, racist as fuck. because that show is problematic as ALL fuck and it’s going to be dispensed to a bunch of white cis men. but that’s the thing. yet again, white cis men aren’t being called out. and i don’t think it’s because white women feminists think men of color have more redeeming qualities to overcome misogyny. it’s because white women generally refuse to put their critiques where they belong. at the feet of the powerful. and that shit is… well transparent, annoying and full of shit. and they don’t deserve excuses because these same women i’m talking about found the time and ear on the street to know the deal about all kinds of things regarding moc and their involvement and abuse and their ability to go forward and then make money. or as jessica valenti style is, support white male rappers by shitting on all people of color in the art of hip-hop, just cause. so yea, i see what you’re saying, but i’ve thought of those possibilities and i don’t see why we are really trying to make excuses for these people if those saying this understand exactly who i am talking about.

Oh you’re absolutely right in all of that and I don’t mean to make excuses for those who don’t deserve them (people who are up on this shit and don’t talk about it, or people who—as you’ve said—make a living being aware of this stuff yet somehow manage to miss one big glaring issue like a famous white guy doing some shit-awful things). I guess I had a particularly selfish, self-interested reflex kick in there. My own knowledge of, and experience with, Charlie Sheen and Charlie Sheen-related media is incredibly low because I’ve just never been up on sitcom-star news. I think the last time I ever thought hard about the guy was when I saw Hot Shots: Part Deux, when I was, like, eleven or something (and then briefly, frustratedly, when he had his whole “meltdown” and subsequent cross-country tour). And though I might not be a prominent feminist blogger (or even a prominent blogger, period), I should certainly be called out on my own misunderstandings, unnecessary excuse-making, bullshit sayings, and so on. So, to your liking, to your convenience, or to your need/want to do so, call me out if I’m saying things that are wrong/fucked-up/tragic/egregious/etc. because it’s everyone’s right to point out such things as they see fit. (I suppose, fwiw, I didn’t realize that I was reblogging feminists who make a living off of this; the community is still rather new to me! [Also: being a white cis-male, I’m pretty sure I’ll wind up saying many stupid things because, after seeing the world through a white cis-male affirming lens for approximately 21 years, I can only *hope* to get it well right enough as soon as possible.])

PS—I just took a peek at your blog and it looks terrific.

It’s fucking frustrating as hell

When people make “jokes” that are “innocuous,” and if only you had just not perceived it to be that way then everything would be okay, y’know? Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck your heterosexist BULLSHIT. AGH.

when someone hates on greek life, but has slept with over 80% of frat guys at Tufts

Really not a fan of this one. Whatever someone’s opinion about Greek Life is, shaming him or her or they for their sexual activity is pretty fucked up. :(

She looks totally DIFFERENT! Like its a dramatic change.

oh wow

You have got to be fucking kidding me

Wow.  I mean, people can do whatever they want, but wow.  She was pretty before the surgeries.  Wow.  I feel so sorry for her.

I immediately had to to google this because … wow, there’s so much happening here. Everything I’m reading just makes my heart hurt even more for this woman. Lighter skin and changed facial features did not make her happier - in fact, she attempted suicide not long after this was published. Really though, my heart. I hope she finds peace.

Socially induced body dysmorphia…but racism doesn’t affect our mental health. Oh. Okay.

Exactly. Whole nations of people bathing in skin lightening creams because they don’t feel attractive or attempting to attain the eurocentric beauty of some media starlett….The chosen light skinned queen of the era.
Kids picking on others for big noses and lips. Being dark or having kinky hair… This kind of bullying just doesn’t spontaneously generate.

Exactly.
